Retirement should be a time of joy and fulfillment, however many experience unexpected feelings of boredom, frustration, or confusion. The abundance of free time can lead to procrastination and a sense of disconnection from oneself and others.
Without a clear plan, your retirement can be challenging. Issues related to family dynamics, social connections, health, and other often-overlooked aspects can arise, leaving you feeling unprepared.
You might think that your aspirations are now out of reach, uncertain about how to achieve long-held dreams in this stage of life. In reality, this phase of life offers endless opportunities.
For years, I’ve explored ageism and the power of language in shaping how we experience life after retirement. Through my experience, I’ve seen firsthand how shifting our perspective can open the door to joy, discovery, and personal growth. Retirement isn’t about proving anything to the world—it’s about embracing what makes us happy, whether that’s starting a new adventure or simply planting a garden.
I coined a new name for us olders – Melders. It stands for a Mindful Elder- who is a vibrant, tenacious individual previously labeled as a Senior Citizen or Retiree. Being Mindful means out thoughts tune to the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future.
As fellow Melders, we’re in this together—navigating the changes, challenges, and opportunities that come with this stage of life. There’s no “right” way to do retirement, only the way that feels right for us.
Above all, no matter where you are in your journey, there is always room for growth, fulfillment, and new possibilities.
As a result of some of these remarkable experiences in my later life, one of my core beliefs is this:
The outdated view of aging as a decline after midlife no longer applies. For instance, Jane Fonda aptly said, “We’re still living with the old paradigm of age as an arch… You’re born, you peak at midlife and decline into decrepitude.” Unfortunately, this mindset can lower personal expectations and negatively impact health.
On the other hand, believing in inevitable decline diminishes motivation and hinders our ability to make significant social and economic contributions as we age.
Colleen managed a successful Airbnb, operated a VRBO in Oregon’s mountains, and taught ballroom dance classes. Despite her achievements, she felt unfulfilled, saying, “I need a job.” Like many, she underestimated her worth and accomplishments. Through coaching, she gained clarity and recognized her true value.
